Armadale moving closer to promotion contention

A top of the table clash did not live up to expectations, but the result was well worth the trip to Alfred Skeet Oval.  From the start Armadale controlled the game and gave Wanneroo no chance to initiate any positive moves.  They opened the scoring in the 7th minute through Keith Mullins.  From a corner in the 18th the ball travelled across the box and Steve Cann easily headed the ball in the back of the net.  No sooner than Wanneroo kicked off and tried something that Armadale made it 3-0 in the 24th minute through Rodney Weeks.  Wanneroo came out in the second half and had to try something to at least restore some pride.  In the 53rd minute they pegged one back, but that was all they could muster in the match.  Some changes were made in the reds line up, and in the 67th minute substitute Oliver Crockford put the final nail in the coffin  with a great run down the right and easily beat the keeper to make it 4-1.
Another great cross to the far post in the 74th minute found Jason Coleman who made no mistake. A wonderful result that keeps the reds on the tail of the leading sides with seven wins in a row in the league.  This weekend sees a dangerous game for the reds away to bottom side Gosnells.  A win is a must and maybe even by a large scoreline to boost the goal difference would be a fine reward.

Reserves: A good return to winning form for the reds with Chris Daley leading the way with four goals. The remaining goals were scored by Adam Coleman and Andrew Millard.  Armadale totally controlled the match, even though the goals came later in the match (first half 1-0) Wanneroo never threatened and buckled under the pressure late in the second half when three goals were scored within the space of seven minutes.  This week will be a tougher assignment as Gosnells are not to be underestimated.

27-Jul-2009 - Saturday Premier League Round 14

An 83rd minute Danny Mahoney stunner has given Armadale a 2 - 1 win over Canning City at Alfred Skeet Oval.

The home victory moved Armadale three points closer to safety and within striking distance of qualifying for the Flexible Signage Solutions Finals Series.

It was a cagey start to the Round 14 encounter with end-to-end football while both sides struggled to settle.  Neither side could gain ascendency as Canning looked to utilise winger Roberto Lujan while Armadale took the central route through Gary Bunting and Mahoney.

Canning pried the first opening 11 minutes in when Paul Van Dongen headed onto Simon Versaico down the left wing.  Versaico cut into the penalty area but was unable to keep his strike down.

Six minutes later, the in-form James Robinson conjured Armadale's first shot on target.  After gaining possession and winding through the midfield, Robinson failed to trouble Ftynogiannis as he also struck high.

Despite the opportunity, Robinson and strike partner Marlon Ramirez were denied space by the compact City defence.  Canning's defenders Rory Mouttet and George Tchami worked hard the other way as their side mounted attacks from the back and endeavoured to find Paul Oliver and Van Dongen up the pitch.

Just short of the half hour mark, Robinson was presented with a golden opportunity as a long ball honoured his left wing diagonal run.  The striker cut in past Tchami and Mouttet only to shoot straight at Canning's ‘keeper.  Minutes later he was again in the action as he headed Bunting's cross wide.

Canning created a chance of their own five minutes from the break when Oliver earned himself a free kick.  The low free kick travelled past the wall falling to Steve Maguire.  Macguire's shot had enough on to produce a save from Armadale's custodian but not enough to seriously trouble him.

The home side started the second 45 the brighter with Paul Harris firing the first shot when he found himself clear.  Harris never quite got balanced and Fytnogiannis covered his strike.

A 66th minute Paul Oliver in swinging free kick caused a moment of trepidation as the ball was headed on by Matt Bennion forcing his own ‘keeper to keep the ball out.

Armadale finally got reward for effort 67 minutes in when a static Canning City defence reacted slowly to a cross.  The indecision allowed Robinson through and his first bite was parried away by Fytnogiannis.  Robinson again reacted fastest as he buried the second opportunity and placed the Reds 1 - nil ahead.

Minutes later Canning City worked to get on an even footing but Daniel Trevisiol was unable to get down his strike quickly enough.  Armadale looked to capitalise on a Ryan Pearson right wing run but Pearson's cross landed in a penalty area devoid of advancing red shirts.

Heading into the last ten minutes Canning looked to have equalised when Lujan's ball released substitute Michael Rogers.  Roger's angled strike flashed wide of the outstretched hand of Pearson and the goals but two minutes later Canning did level the score.  Trevisiol bustled through a mass of bodies at the back post to turn the ball in and bring a rejuvenated City even.

The celebrations were short lived, as all of Canning's hard work was undone immediately after the restart.

After conceding, the Red's moved the ball through the midfield until the loose ball was pounced on by Danny Mahoney.  His sweetly hit 25-yard strike ricocheted off three defenders before deflecting past a diving Ftynogiannis to send Armadale 2 - 1 ahead.

Armadale had an opportunity to double the advantage on the full time whistle with Andy Pomfrett's cross heavily met by Oishi Nai and the Canning ‘keeper.  While there was no result from that move, Armadale had the result they wanted from the match.

POSITIVES TAKEN OUT OF THIS MATCH

A tough ask for the reds (in division 3) to get past the ladder leaders (and undefeated) Belmont from the first division.  But, the start of the game didn''t seem to give that impression.  Armadale were the aggressors and contained the more fancied Belmont outfit putting together some good passing football.  With a few forced changes to the reds side, the team didn''t lose any strenght and went close to taking the lead on a few occasion.  Unfortunately in the 29th minute Belmont took the lead through some crambly football in the box and made no mistake. Armadale continued to look more threatening but never caught that equalizer.  In the second half Belmont found the second goal in the 53rd minute and once again nothing spectacular, but at the end of the day it doesn''t matter how they go in the back of the net.  The armadale side can take away a lot of positives from the match and know that they did push the division one side more than some other division one teams have done this season, as some Belmont players commented that it was a tougher game than they have had in their own division. This week the reds will return to try and climb the division 3 league with a tough match against Wanneroo at Alfred Skeet Oval.

ARMADALE  NEED TO CARRY ON THEIR WINNING WAY

James Robinson struck a dramatic injury-time winner to give struggling Armadale victory over Cockburn at Dalmatinac Park in a passionate contest that saw both sides finish with 10 men.

The home side had fought gallantly after the 28th-minute dismissal of keeper Nick Feely and looked set to take a point before Robinson poked home a corner to make it back-to-back victories for Brad Hassell’s side.

Renato Jelen had the first shot of the afternoon, his effort from 20 yards fizzing just over Alex Pearson’s goal, then at the other end Gary Bunting’s free-kick from the right corner of the penalty box beat everyone but Feely was down smartly to gather.

However, the Reds should have opened the scoring after 21 minutes.

Jeff Bright found Mo Atak down the left but when he delivered a pinpoint cross, an unmarked Kieran Tracey sliced horribly wide from 10 yards.

Scott Miller’s side were living dangerously and were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men moments later when Ryan Pretorious pulled Robinson down 25 yards out. With only Feely behind him, the Cockburn defender could consider himself fortunate referee David Scragg only produced a yellow card — Bunting wasting the free-kick by firing straight at Feely.

Llewellyn Bake sent a snap shot wide from 20 yards for the hosts but their task became a whole lot tougher just before the half-hour mark.

Atak sent Robinson through on goal and when the Armadale striker attempted to clip the ball past Feely, the keeper — who’d advanced beyond the penalty area — stuck out a hand, leaving Scragg with no option but to show a red card.
Substitute keeper Jason O’Byrne took over, with Aaron dos Santos the unlucky player to be sacrificed. O’Byrne was immediately called into action but had no problem saving Danny Mahoney’s poor free-kick.

With half-time approaching, both sides had a wonderful opportunity to take the lead.

Robinson was the first offender, slicing well wide of a gaping net after pouncing on a Pretorious mistake and rounding O’Byrne.

Then within seconds, Michael Grigo put the ball over from 12 yards, although to be fair he didn’t know too much about it after Michael Mirco’s long-range effort was deflected into his path.

Despite their numerical advantage, Army were unable to create any clear-cut chances in the early stages of the second period, Robinson’s glancing header from Mahoney’s cross that flashed wide and Bunting’s angled drive that cleared the crossbar their best efforts.

But as the 10 men of Cockburn began to tire, the visitors sensed an opening and after 83 minutes Tracey poked the ball just wide after a determined run from Mahoney.

Substitute Matt Benion then blazed over from the edge of the area after Robinson had done well to cut the ball back from the byline.

In a rare threat on the Armadale goal, Jelen struck a free-kick over from the left edge of the box as a bit of niggle crept into the match.

That spilled over with two minutes remaining when Tracey was dismissed for dissent.

O’Byrne then came to his side’s rescue twice in quick succession, first denying Atak as the Reds man tried to take the ball round him, then making a brilliant block low down to keep out Robinson.

However, the Armadale striker was not to be denied and, with the final whistle just seconds away, he was in the right place at the right time to divert a low corner past the unlucky O’Byrne to give his side all three points.

Robinson might have made it 2-0 moments later, his low drive from a tight angle flashing inches wide of the far post.
But it mattered not as a delighted Hassell was able to celebrate a well-deserved victory.

The Armadale boss said: “We tried hard to break them down and to their credit they defended really well and if it had ended 0-0, I really couldn’t have complained because they defended well and we just couldn’t break them down.

“I think we controlled the play but, like I said, they were very strong across the back and in the end we had to go wide and get the crosses in but we just couldn’t get through.

“We persisted and had some really good chances and some good one-on-ones, we just didn’t put them away but we never gave up and scored in the last minute.

“The most important thing is we got back to back victories which is something we can kick on from, it was something I really wanted to do.”

In the reserves, Armadale had another victory 2-1  while the under 18''s went down 3-1
