ARMADALE NEED TO CARRY ON THEIR WINNING WAY
James Robinson struck a dramatic injury-time winner to give struggling Armadale victory over Cockburn at Dalmatinac Park in a passionate contest that saw both sides finish with 10 men.
The home side had fought gallantly after the 28th-minute dismissal of keeper Nick Feely and looked set to take a point before Robinson poked home a corner to make it back-to-back victories for Brad Hassell’s side.
Renato Jelen had the first shot of the afternoon, his effort from 20 yards fizzing just over Alex Pearson’s goal, then at the other end Gary Bunting’s free-kick from the right corner of the penalty box beat everyone but Feely was down smartly to gather.
However, the Reds should have opened the scoring after 21 minutes.
Jeff Bright found Mo Atak down the left but when he delivered a pinpoint cross, an unmarked Kieran Tracey sliced horribly wide from 10 yards.
Scott Miller’s side were living dangerously and were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men moments later when Ryan Pretorious pulled Robinson down 25 yards out. With only Feely behind him, the Cockburn defender could consider himself fortunate referee David Scragg only produced a yellow card — Bunting wasting the free-kick by firing straight at Feely.
Llewellyn Bake sent a snap shot wide from 20 yards for the hosts but their task became a whole lot tougher just before the half-hour mark.
Atak sent Robinson through on goal and when the Armadale striker attempted to clip the ball past Feely, the keeper — who’d advanced beyond the penalty area — stuck out a hand, leaving Scragg with no option but to show a red card.
Substitute keeper Jason O’Byrne took over, with Aaron dos Santos the unlucky player to be sacrificed. O’Byrne was immediately called into action but had no problem saving Danny Mahoney’s poor free-kick.
With half-time approaching, both sides had a wonderful opportunity to take the lead.
Robinson was the first offender, slicing well wide of a gaping net after pouncing on a Pretorious mistake and rounding O’Byrne.
Then within seconds, Michael Grigo put the ball over from 12 yards, although to be fair he didn’t know too much about it after Michael Mirco’s long-range effort was deflected into his path.
Despite their numerical advantage, Army were unable to create any clear-cut chances in the early stages of the second period, Robinson’s glancing header from Mahoney’s cross that flashed wide and Bunting’s angled drive that cleared the crossbar their best efforts.
But as the 10 men of Cockburn began to tire, the visitors sensed an opening and after 83 minutes Tracey poked the ball just wide after a determined run from Mahoney.
Substitute Matt Benion then blazed over from the edge of the area after Robinson had done well to cut the ball back from the byline.
In a rare threat on the Armadale goal, Jelen struck a free-kick over from the left edge of the box as a bit of niggle crept into the match.
That spilled over with two minutes remaining when Tracey was dismissed for dissent.
O’Byrne then came to his side’s rescue twice in quick succession, first denying Atak as the Reds man tried to take the ball round him, then making a brilliant block low down to keep out Robinson.
However, the Armadale striker was not to be denied and, with the final whistle just seconds away, he was in the right place at the right time to divert a low corner past the unlucky O’Byrne to give his side all three points.
Robinson might have made it 2-0 moments later, his low drive from a tight angle flashing inches wide of the far post.
But it mattered not as a delighted Hassell was able to celebrate a well-deserved victory.
The Armadale boss said: “We tried hard to break them down and to their credit they defended really well and if it had ended 0-0, I really couldn’t have complained because they defended well and we just couldn’t break them down.
“I think we controlled the play but, like I said, they were very strong across the back and in the end we had to go wide and get the crosses in but we just couldn’t get through.
“We persisted and had some really good chances and some good one-on-ones, we just didn’t put them away but we never gave up and scored in the last minute.
“The most important thing is we got back to back victories which is something we can kick on from, it was something I really wanted to do.”
In the reserves, Armadale had another victory 2-1 while the under 18''s went down 3-1
