03.11.08 - Presidents message

It is with sadness that I write my first message on our website, I had intentions of speaking about our club and our planning for the future however a much more important message needs to be made.

The Armadale Soccer Club is mourning today with the sudden death of club stalwart Mick Goodwin. I personally cannot confirm exactly how long Mick has been involved in our club, however I know he was involved a lot longer than I have been associated with the club, which is over 15 years. Mick was a true gentleman who achieved a well deserved Life Membership at Armadale Soccer Club. He was involved in many ways over the years and was invaluable with his voluntary contributions around the club. The spirit and loyalty Mick felt for our club was uncompromising and luckily for us it has also been instilled into his sons Jason & Gavin who have been associated with our club for many years and I am sure will continue for many more.

On behalf of all members of Armadale Soccer Club, I would like to offer Carol and family our condolences at this very sad time. I know I speak for all that knew him when I say that Mick will truly be missed by us all.

Tony Greipl - President - Armadale Soccer Club

27.09.08 - Boi gives Glory Youth first up victory

A second half goal from Stirling Lions young midfielder Ludovic Boi gave Perth Glory a winning start to the National Youth League against the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Friday night. Reds striker Ryan Pearson (Below) played a full game and impressed on his debut.

Boi capitalised on some sloppy defending from the Mariners to score the only goal of the match in the 57th minute. It will be a night to remember for the 18-year-old who was closely marked by the Mariners defence and received a number of strong tackles, but bounced back to slot home from inside the box after great work by Western Knights Anthony Skorich on the right.

Glory deserved the 1-0 victory with the visitors dominating much of the play, especially in the second half when the Mariners were pushing forward in a bid to snatch an equaliser.

Boi's winner was one of several good chances for the Glory but Mariners goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was forced to make a string of quality saves in the final 25 minutes, as Gareth Naven’s side dominated.

Under the watchful eye of Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek, the Mariners and Glory both adopted attacking game plans. Central Coast's Laurence Braude had the first chance of the match after six minutes but his low shot went just wide and four minutes later Sean Mitchell again had a chance to put the Mariners in front but failed to hit the target.

After a steady start the visitors hit back and had a number of chances themselves. Adam Luka’s free kick from the edge of the box on 12 minutes flew just wide of the post and two minutes later Skorich fired the wrong side of the post.

Hayden Doyle started well in the right full back slot and combined well with Adam Luca who played some exquisite first time balls for Glory’s runners Ludovic Boi and Armadale’s Ryan Pearson.

Nick Rizzo was hungry for the ball and showed he is not far off a senior call up by being involved all night with penetrating runs. His free kick on 25 minutes was only parried by keeper Andrew Redmayne and the Mariners scrambled the ball away.

The turning point of the game came on 31 minutes when Glory and former Joey’s keeper Tando Velaphi produced a stunning double save to deny the Mariners and in the goal mouth scramble that ensued Mariners striker Brady Smith was sent off for a crude challenge on Stirling Lions defender Dean Evans. The tough young defender shook off the effects and continued to play out the match.

It was a total team effort and after Boi’s goal the young Glory side continued to press and Naven made four subs in the second half, all who came on adding plenty of bite in the final 30 minutes as Glory searched for a second. Howard Fondyke, Andrija Jukic, James Sammut and Reece Vittiglia helped put the CCM defence under intense pressure and the Glory eventually ran out victors.

It was a great start for Gareth Naven and Scott Miller and their young chargers who have another away match next week against Melbourne Victory before playing their first game at home as a curtain raiser to the Glory’s match against Sydney FC in round 8.

21.09.08 - Reds leave it late (By Scoop Rafferty)

Armadale 2 Stirling Lions 2

A late equaliser by Armadale’s Perth Glory Youth Side squad member Ryan Pearson denied a desperate Stirling Lions any chance of a top four finals berth in another spirited encounter in round 22 of the Football west Premier League clash at Alfred Skeet Oval.

The game began in sensational fashion when 60 seconds into the match Armadale fans felt Stirling Lions keeper Phil Straker had handled outside his box when charging down a Ryan Pearson strike but he received the benefit of the doubt by the linesman much to the home supporter’s disgust.

Stirling dominated the early passages and Armadale keeper Cyril Sharrock produced two stunning saves inside the first five minutes from Jordan Rhodes and Phil Arnold so it came somewhat of a surprise when Armadale took the lead on 14 minutes. Midfield tyro John Lund was given too much space and his 25-yard right foot strike cannoned in off the post with Straker helpless.

Straker was again in action moments later when he got his fingertips to a Daryl Platten sizzler from long range. Stirling continued to unsettle the home defence and were level on 32 minutes when Dean Evans easily converted from the spot after a Kodi Madeley tackle on Steve Hesketh in the box.

Gary Faria almost put the home side ahead again but his curling right foot shot bounced back off the crossbar. Stirling took a deserved lead just before half time when Ludo Boi took advantage after a mix up between Shannon Dally and Matt Bennion (left) deep in defence and he fired home from the edge of the box past a startled Sharrock.

An acrobatic clearance off the line by Bennion just before half time kept Armadale in the match and Madeley put his body on the line deflecting a Steve Hesketh strike just after the break. Up until then Michael Pugliese, Dean Evans and Chris Rutherford looked in control at the back for the visitors but they were almost caught napping when Nao Oishi found James Robinson but his shot off balance squirmed wide of the mark.

With time running out and both sides giving their all Armadale snatched the equalizer 10 minutes from time when Faria's sublime pass found Pearson inside the box and his deft touch and clinical finish had the home fans in raptures.

Both sides were in pursuit of a winner and Joe Brunetto couldn't get enough power on his header after a Marlon Ramirez cross and Brunetto again forced Straker into a superb point blank save moments after Rhodes blasted over with the goal at his mercy for the Lions.

But there was one more twist to the saga when Armadale's James Robinson was charging in on goal with seconds remaining only to be halted by the linesman's flag in a very tight decision. Full credit to both sides, in providing both sets of supporters with a thoroughly entertaining finish to the season.

19.09.08 - Reds look to end season off on a high against Lions

The Reds host Stirling Lions tomorrow in the final league game of the Football West Premier League season at Alfred Skeet Oval (3pm)

It’s been a fantastic end to the season for Brad Hassell’s side and he was delighted with his sides performance against the Knights last week. “It was probably our best performance of the season last week. Our first half was played at such quick pace and passion I really didn’t want it to end. I told the boys at half time, even though we were winning that the score was 0-0 and go out and play like we did in the first and we did and ran out convincing 4-0 winners,” said Hassell.

He was happy with the whole team performance but thought the midfield were outstanding against the Knights. “Kodi Madeley and Gary Faria (left) have worked well together over recent weeks. Kodi was given a role on Saturday to get the ball, tackle hard and he did it to a tee, while Gary delivered the telling balls we all know he can. They have formed a great partnership and add Ryan Pearson, who has matured into a great player and John Lund it was a fantastic midfield effort on Saturday,” said Hassell.

On the visit of the Lions Hassell believes it will be a great game for the spectators. “It should be cracker to end the season, and the Lions have something to play for while we don’t. I hope we can give them a good game as we’ve ended the season so well we’d like to continue with it and if results go our way we can move up a couple of places on the league table which will be great,” said Hassell.

In team news Andy Bowyer will miss the Lions game due to suspension but apart from that Hassell has a full squad to choose from.

Stirling Lions’ slim play-off hopes rely on a win against the Reds and other results going in their favour. Marc Anthony’s return to form has been the catalyst for Stirling to come into final’s contention with a run of four games without defeat. Stars of tomorrow Dean Evans and Michael Pugliese have done a superb job anchoring a young and inexperienced defence this season. Ludovic Boi, who along with Evans are Perth Glory Youth squad members, has been outstanding this season in midfield along with Jordan Rhodes and Phil Arnold. Steve Porter will be missing tomorrow due to injury but he will be replaced in the squad by Alan Muir who returns from suspension.

It should be a great game get along and support the Reds. The 18’s kick off at 11am, the 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $8 adults and $6 concessions. Under 15’s are admitted free.

Last time we met the Lions at Alfred Skeet Oval

Armadale 0 Stirling Lion 0 - Football West Premier League Round 2 - 2007

The last time we met the Lions here at Alfred Skeet Oval, the Reds showed they had no intention of languishing towards the foot of the table by clawing out a 0-0 with a powerful Stirling Lions line-up.

The best chance of the first half came on 14 minutes when, following an Armadale corner, Marlon Ramirez stabbed the ball high from 5-metres. Other than that, chances were few and far between in an opening period in which Stirling was unable to breakdown the defensive style of Armadale, who battled hard and worked tirelessly.

It wasn’t until late in the half that David Dugdale finally broke through only to place wide in a one-on-one with Cyril Sharrock (right). Stirling introduced teenage sensation Ludovic Boi as well as Tommy Jones at the break in an attempt to open up a well-drilled home backline lead by Lee Hallums and Darryl Platten.

However, it would be the home team which stepped up a gear in the second half and on 56 minutes Darren Kingston’s powerful header from 9-metres was acrobatically kept out by Stirling custodian Phil Straker. The eastern corridor side created another great opportunity on 72 minutes when, from near the corner flag, Adam Galvin crossed perfectly for Ryan Pearson who shot high from close-range much to the disappointment of the home crowd.

Leo Harman should have given Stirling the lead six minutes later after intercepting a poor back-pass inside the 18-yard box but his shot cannoned back off the inside of the far post. Soon after Boi sent in a cross to Keith Brown who rushed his shot over the crossbar as Stirling came home under full steam. The last chance of the afternoon fell to Harman who was left unmarked at a final minute corner which he headed high from 7-metres.

14.09.08 - Faria at the double for Reds (by Scoop Rafferty)

Armadale 4 Western Knights 0

Armadale, aided by two stunning strikes by midfield maestro Gary Faria, plus goals to James Robinson and Kodi Madeley overcame a very disappointing Western Knights outfit at an overcast Alfred Skeet Oval today.

The game was only 30 seconds old when Faria fired a shot well over from 35 yards after a George Tchami error and Faria was again in the action two minutes later when he tried to find John Lund free on the left but Knights keeper Kevin Miller pounced like a tiger before Lund could get the final touch. Armadale had the Knights defence on the back foot and after Ryan Pearson fired just wide from an Andy Pomfrett corner a superb defence splitting pass by Lund found Armadale's leading scorer James Robinson and as he careered towards goal he was ankle tapped by Marco Warmt-Murray and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty to the home side. After scoring from the spot last week against Fremantle ,Pomfrett (right) looked a shoe in but Miller pushed his shot onto the crossbar and had time to regain his feet to save the rebound.

Armadale's defence led by Daryl Platten were in complete control and it took the visitors 17 minutes before they created their first chance but Tchami fired well over from 30 yards. Gaps were starting to appear in the Knights defence and Pomfrett and Lund were creating havoc down the left flank and Miller again came to the rescue diving at the feet of Robinson on 22 minutes.

Some nice work from Luka Jukic after 28 minutes found David Micevski but his shot was charged down by the courageous Lund. Jukic was again the provider when his free kick found Daniel Trim but his week header was easily saved by the birthday boy Cyril Sharrock in the Armadale goal. Robinson's skill and pace was a corncern for the visitors and David Annall was given a yellow card for a crude tackle on the Englishman. Armadale took a deserved lead in the 35th minute when Faria found the skillful Pearson down the right wing and as he closed in on goal he unselfishly found Robinson (left) who stabbed the ball home easily from four yards for his 11th goal of the season.

After hardly creating a chance in the first 45 minutes the Knights began with all guns blazing and Matt Allen muffed an easy chance on 47 minutes and two minutes later Micevski superb pass found Paul Cooke down the left flank but his left foot strike flew just over the bar. Pearson found Faria outside the box fiveminutes later but his left footer just whistled past Millers near post. Armadale doubled their lead on 57 minutes when Josip Peran's header under pressure from Pearson found the hard working Nao Oishi down the left and he played the ball back to Faria (right) near the corner of the penalty area and he curled a superb shot into the top corner of Miller's goal for one of the goals of the season.

The Knights pressed and two minutes later Micevski tried to outpace Matt Bennion but Andy Bowyer put in another fine tackle to halt his progress. On the hour Pomfrett found Robinson who again slipped his marker but his long range effort was easily saved by the Knights custodian. The Knights were reduced to 10 men on 70 minutes when Pearson put Lund through on goal but he was brought down by Matt Allen. Faria bent his free kick around the wall and into the bottom left hand corner with Miller well beaten for his second goal of the match and Armadale's third.

Then 60 seconds later Armadale were also reduced to 10 men when Bowyer fouled Micevski for his 2nd yellow. Armadale put the icing on Sharrock's birthday cake when they made it 4-0 on 83 minutes when Mo Atak's cross found Kodi Madeley (left) and he showed composure well beyond his years to fire a low shot wide of Millers right mitt. The Knights best chance fell five minutes from the end when Jukic found Sub Daniel Micevski but his fierce shot hit the side netting. Both sides just went through the motions for the last five minutes as Armadale maintained their fine finish to the season.

12.09.08 - Reds host the Knights in round 21

The Reds will look to continue their recent good form when they entertain Western Knights in round 21 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday at Alfred Skeet Oval (3pm)

The Reds have only lost once in eight games, but defensively last week they were poor after escaping with a 5-4 win against Fremantle Spirit. “We missed Cyril in goal last week, and the back four were very ordinary,” said first team manager Ken Madeley.

“We started really well and were bossing the game, but we gave Freo too much space and they walked past us. We made changes at the break, after Brad had calmed down, but we still looked flat, and even our strikers’ missed opportunities. It’s a funny old game football, and to play that poor defensively and still get three points is a positive, I think?” added Madeley.

The Knights have also found some form in recent weeks and are coming off a stunning 3-2 victory against Floreat Athena, and Madeley believes it will be a good game. “The Knights are a good side, but we want to win and with a couple of results going our way we could still catch a couple of teams on the table,” said Madeley.

The side has trained well this week and Coach Brad Hassell has made a number of changes to the squad for Saturday’s game. Madeley said: “It’s great to have a full squad, not like the earlier part of the season when me and Brad where thinking of getting our boots on,” joked Madeley

“We’ve got Cyril Sharrock (left)back from his suspension, while Daryl Platten and John Lund will come into contention after playing in the reserves last week. We have doubts over Mark Darby, who will have a late fitness test, likewise Shannon Dally and Jason Goodwin,” explained Madeley.

The Knights, who have also reached the Soccer Pools Cup final, have won their last three games and Coach Ronnie Campbell will hope to continue that on Saturday, so it should be a great encounter.

Get along and support the Reds, under 18’s kick off at 11am, under23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $8 adults, $6 concessions and under 5’s are admitted free.

Last time we met the Knights at Alfred Skeet Oval

Reds 1 Western Knights 0 – Round 15 – 04.08.07

The last time we met Western Knights at Alfred Skeet Oval, a late strike by New Zealander import Shannon Daly allowed the Reds to upset the Knights 1-0 in front of a passionate home crowd.

After a run of impressive showings for no reward, Billy Russell's boys came out firing with the silky skills and pace of Neil Gawley causing several nervous moments for the Knights rearguard. The first chance of a very tight half was carved out when Gawley threaded a pass to Darren Kingston who dragged his shot wide of the target.

The Knights should have gone ahead five minutes out from the interval but Jon Mathers volleyed high at point blank range after being picked out by Stuart Montgomery. Injury to Gawley and Jason Goodwin forced Armadale to re-shuffle their pack for the second half with the addition of Ben Howe and Simon El Chami.

With Andrija Jukic running the show from the midfield, it was the Knights who made the stronger start to the new period. And they were unlucky not to go in front when Jukic transferred possession to Michael Johnson whose deflected effort bounced just wide of the goal. Dusan Macura and Daryl Platten (left) were outstanding in the centre of a defence constantly under pressure.

As the clock ticked down the pace quickened and the game opened up as both sides went in search of an elusive goal. Kingston was allowed in on 82 minutes but should have done better than shoot weakly into the arms of Kevin Miller. Four minutes later Kingston made amends by pressuring Miller into spilling Macura's chip forward and Dally reacted instinctively by netting the decider from close-range.

06.08.09 - Reds win a nine goal thriller (Report by Scoop Rafferty)

Fremantle Spirit 4 Armadale 5

Despite two goals each from Peter Vukmirovic and Cameron McLean, Fremantle Spirit's miserable season continued when a late own goal handed Armadale all three points in a high scoring encounter at Wauhop Park on Saturday.

The Reds struck first with only three minutes on the clock, when fine work between Matt Bennion and Nao Oishi found Ryan Pearson charging down the left wing and as he waltzed past Llewellyn Bake his low cross into a crowded goalmouth was bundled over the line by the nippy Oishi (right).

Fremantle were back into the game on 12 minutes when Simon Elton-Bott found the silky skills of Jason Barerra and his hard driven cross shot skidded off the near post and former Armadale player Vukmirovic was quickest to react and smashed the ball past keeper Beau Geerling.

By now Armadale's Gary Faria and Kodi Madeley were starting to stamp their authority on the game and they again took the lead when a long throw by Mo Atak found scoring machine James Robinson (left) who rose unchallenged to head wide of the despairing dive of Steve Grant.

Fremantle quickly responded and the busy Elton-Bott fired over from 20-yards, but 60 seconds later the visitor's had their third when an Oishi cross was headed past his own keeper by the unfortunate Cameron Hayes. Armadale relaxed and some atrocious defending resulted in Elton-Bott finding Vukmirovic in space to fire home his second of the afternoon. Incredibly they pulled it back to 3-3 when Elton-Bott again exposed the Reds defence and his slick pass found promising striker Cameron McLean and he showed his class when slotting past the gob smacked Geerling in goal.

Armadale were rattled and straight from the kick off Bennion gave away the ball and Callum Roberts found McLean in space but Geerling's reactions were quicker this time and he pushed the shot around the post.

Armadale coach Brad Hassell's stinging half time chat worked because Armadale took the lead again three minutes into the half when Llewellyn Bake copped a baking from his own fans by bringing down Atak in the box. Andy Pomfrett (right) strode up and sent Grant the wrong way from the spot to regain the lead for the visitors.

The home side again pressed forward and pulled it back to 4-4 on 57 minutes when a fierce Roberts’ drive was parried by Alex Preece, who had replaced Geerling and McLean blasted home the rebound for his second of the match. Armadale were desperate for the winner but the home keeper pulled off a string of fine saves from Madeley, Lund and Robinson.

Fremantle fans were hoping for a penalty in the 75 minute after a dazzling run by the cramping Vukmirovic but he clearly dived and Referee David Costello who had a fine game correctly waved play on. The Spirit could smell blood and Preece got down well to Roberts long-range effort and McLean wasted a great chance for his hat tric,k but with five minutes left Armadale defender Daryl Platten's harmless cross struck Joeseph Moffat's leg and trickled over the line past home keeper Grant for the winner to the relief of the away supporters.

Robinson had a chance to add salt to the wound, his effort fizzing just wide but it mattered not as Fremantle had shot themselves in the foot.

Reds Coach Brad Hassell was pleased to pick up the three points but far from impressed with his side's defending. "To concede four goals is bloody terrible," he said.

"We knew it wouldn't be an easy game because they had nothing to play for and could just come out relaxed and play the ball around.

"I just wanted to make sure our boys were switched on — half of them were, but the back four weren't."

05.09.08 - Reds look to continue their good form at Fremantle

The Reds go in search of their fifth victory of the season when they travel to Fremantle Spirit in round 20 of the Football West Premier league on Saturday at Wauhop Park. (3pm)

The port side are already relegated but Coach Brad Hassell (right) hopes his side can continue on from last week’s impressive 4-1 win against Swan IC. “We played well against Swan and won quite convincingly, but that sort of win had been coming for a while, we’ve improved over recent weeks but haven’t finished teams off, that changed last week, and it was good to final secure our Premier League status next season,” said Hassell.

On the trip to Wauhop Park Hassell said: “The biggest threat for us will be the mental side of it, they are relegated and have nothing to lose, and I’m sure they will go out there and give it their all looking for their first win of the season. Can we overcome that? We do have the players to do it but on the day it will be a tough game but one I’m confident we can take the three points,”

The pitch at Wauhop Park has been criticised in recent weeks but Hassell believes it’s the same for both sides on the day. “I’ve heard reports regarding the playing surface but at the end of the day it’s the same for both sides and it’s who wants it the most that will get the three points and I hope its us on Saturday,” said Hassell.

In team news Cyril Sharrock is still suspended and Beau Geerlings will continue between the sticks, while Shannon dally is available again after injury and he has been added to the squads for the Fremantle trip.

Fremantle are still searching for their first victory of the season and were beaten 2-4 at home last week against Western Knights. In goal Steve Grant has been great in a losing side and at the back Simon Elton-Bott and Tom Straker have been good. In midfield Jason Barerra and Ben Kelly have performed well while David Rodgers and Callum Roberts have caused defences problems all season.

Get along and support the Reds, Phil Campher’s under 18’s kick off at 11am, Ken Jarvis’ 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission at Wauhop Park is $8 adults, $6 concessions and under 15’s are admitted free.

The Last time we met the Spirit away from home

Fremantle Spirit 1 Armadale 1 – Round 4 – 28.04.07

The last time we met the Spirit away from home, the points were shared at the WA Spanish Club where they fought out an entertaining 1-1 draw. It was an even opening without many chances, Cisco Jorquiera's through ball to Ray Rose created the first opportunity but with the goalkeeper to beat and a defender on his heels the Fremantle striker screwed his shot wide.

The closest Armadale came to scoring was on 21 minutes when Ryan Pearson's tame shot from distance took an unusual hop and almost snuck between Steve Grant's legs. After a lacklustre opening stanza, the teams came out with different mindsets for the second half. The all important breakthrough came on 62 minutes when Rose latched on to a great cross from Jason Barrera to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Within a minute Armadale were back on level terms when Pearson took advantage of some hesitant defending to poke in a loose ball from five-yards. The goals breathed new life into the final twenty minutes as both teams rallied for the winner. Sharrock was quick off his line to diffuse the danger after Jorqueira beat the offside trap, however, the Fremantle attacker would take no further part in the game after colliding heavily with the 'keeper.

With five minutes remaining as Fremantle were reduced to ten men with the dismissal of Sebastian Booysen for a second bookable offence. As the match headed into injury time one last chance came the way of Armadale as the ball fell to feet of Pearson and with only the 'keeper to beat the youngster crashed his shot into the underside of the crossbar and graciously into the arms of Grant.

Robinson stars for Reds in victory against Swan

Reds import striker James Robinson played a virtuoso performance last week against Swan IC, and his second half was outstanding. The striker, who joined the Reds from Moldan Town in the Ryman Premier League in the UK, scored twice and was denied a hat trick by the wood work and he was delighted with the side’s performance in the 4-1 win. “We totally dominated the whole game and it was nice to get a big score on the board, which we’ve been threatening for weeks. We’ve had our fair share of heavy defeats before I arrived including a 1-5 lose at Swan earlier in the season, so it was good for the club to dish one out today,” said Robinson.

Armadale Coach Brad Hassell was delighted with Robinson’s performance. “He played well against Swan but he’s played well since he’s arrived. He’s such a crafty player and is one of the best finishers I’ve seen in this league and has two good feet, on the day he could have had five,” said Hassell.

The striker scored two but thought he should have had a hat-trick. “Yes I missed a few today, but I didn’t let it get me down I just got on with it and I got the results later on. I got in some good positions, but their keeper made a couple of good saves and I hit the bar with one but to win the game is more important and we did that today,” added Robinson.

Robinson started on Saturday with Japanese import Nao Oisihi (Honda to his team mates), who scored two in the first half, and the Englishman is enjoying their partnership. “It’s been good working with Honda he works really hard and makes it easier for me, we seemed to work well together and long may it continue.

“The service from Gary (Faria) and Kodi (Madeley) is first class they are both quality players and they have laid a number of goals for me a on a plate this season which makes my job easy,” explained Robinson.

The striker will head home soon to carry on his football in the UK. “I’ll be heading home to re-join Moldan Town on September 22, which I’m looking forward to but first I’ve got a few games left at Armadale to enjoy before then,” added Robinson.

Reds duo selected in State Squad

Reds duo Daryl Platten (right) and English import John Lund have been selected in the Western Australian Men’s State team, and Coach Robbie Dunn has selected a 32 man squad in preparation for the Stratco Cup clash against South Australia on October 11.

The squad will be trimmed before they are due to depart for Adelaide for the clash against the South Australian state team at Marsden Sports Complex in October.

Dunn has been delighted at the response from the players so far in making themselves available for selection.

“The players can now see that Football West are serious about the State team and have been brilliant in making themselves available” said Dunn.

“It is a great honour to play for your state and we had Scott Bulloch sign with the Perth Glory on the back of his performance for the state side against them in June”.

“I am confident that we will have our A-team available and primed for action come October 11 to knock off the ‘crow eaters’ and bring the Stratco Cup back to WA”.

Red Coach Brad Hassell was delighted for the duo. “It’s always good news when players in your side are selected in representation games and I wish them good luck in the final selection. James Robinson was also selected in the squad but he’s unavailable. It’s great for the club and we hope in years to come we can get some more of our quality youngsters playing for WA,” said Hassell.

Preliminary WA State Men’s Squad:

Andy Brown, Phil O’Callaghan (Mandurah City), Liam Lilley, Johnny Mirco, (Cockburn City), Callum Roberts, Jason Barrera (Fremantle Spirit), Luka Jukic, David Micevski (Western Knights), John Lund, Daryl Platten (Armadale), Aaron Cole, Damian Scali (Swan IC), Antonio Naglieri, Greg Sharland, Matt Danskin, David Onoforo, Gareth Deeg, Todd Howarth (Perth SC), Stuart Montgomery, Todd Harnwell, Neil Young (Sorrento), Ian McMurray, Craig Young (ECU Joondalup), Jason Colli, Shayne Pryce (Inglewood), Adam Bachillor, John Migas, Ante Kovacevic, Daniel Niederberger, Brad Scott (Floreat Athena), Marc Anthony, Phil Straker (Stirling Lions)

Robinson and Oishi star was Reds thrash Swans

Armadale 4 Swans 1

Armadale secured their Premier League future after stunning Swan IC 4-1 in Saturday’s Football West Premier League clash at Alfred Skeet Oval. Strike partners Nao Oishi and James Robinson scored two a piece for Brad Hassell’s side, and with their nearest rivals Fremantle Spirit beaten 2-4 at home by Western Knights the Reds can contemplate Premier League football at the club next season.

A minutes silence was observed prior to kick off in a mark of respect for the sad passing of former Armadale SC committee member and major sponsor Mr. Andrew Johnson. He would have been proud of the clubs afternoon to come.

Swan IC arrived without a win on the road this season and they began brightly. Andy O’Neill’s great run past three defenders on four minutes ended with Armadale keeper Beau Geerlings blocking his initial shot, and the 17-year-old keeper pounced on the rebound.

Then five minutes later Geoff Mason found Brendan Knox in space on the right, his shot from the angle went over the bar, and sixty seconds later Dom Ando’s free kick found the Swans leading goalscorer Damian Scali, who headed just over the bar.

The home side settled and their first opportunity came on 12 minutes, Gary Faria’s corner found its way to Andrew Bowyer (left), whose first time shot was straight at Cory Hugo.

It was end-to-end football now as both sides looked to take control of the game. The Swans best opportunity of the match came on 18 minutes, Scali was the provider, his run and cross from the left found Dejan Djukanovic five-yards out, but his diving header was well saved by Geerlings.

Then on their next foray forward the home side hit the front, Robinson’s intelligent ball on 19 minutes spilt the Swans defence wide open and Japanese import Oishi finished clinically past Hugo for his first senior goal for the club.

The goal seemed to settle the Reds down and they went close again on 26 minutes, Faria’s perfectly weighted pass sent Robinson clear, but the Englishman’s low shot was deflected wide by Hugo.

A poor clearance from Geerlings on the half hour almost let the visitors back into the game but Scali’s lob back into an unguarded net was just past the post, and five minutes later O’Neill cut in from the right but his shot was straight at Geerlings.

It was 2-0 to the home side on 40 minutes, Faria and Robinson combined again on the left, and when Robinson cut the ball back Oishi fired home via the post to double Brad Hassell’s sides lead at the break.

Armadale began the second half where they left off in the first; Mo Atak crossed from the right on 50 minutes and found the unmarked Robinson who headed over from six-yards. The Swans also had their chances, on the hour O’Neill’s run and cross found Mason in on goal, but the young striker delayed his shot and the chance was lost.

Robinson was having a superb game and he went close to increasing the home sides lead on 64 minutes, he cut inside the box from the right but his low shot was well saved by Hugo at full stretch.

Moments later Robinson beat three Swans defenders on the right and his delicate chip from the edge of the box crashed off the crossbar with Hugo well beaten.

Hugo was a busy man; first he denied Oishi his hat-trick with a smart save to his right on 67 minutes and sixty seconds later saved Kodi Madeley’s shot from 18-yards. The home side’s pressure finally paid off and it was 3-0 on 70 minutes. Robinson won possession on the left of the box from Swans defender Chris Marshall, and he kept his composure and fired low past Hugo, much to the delight of the Armadale faithful.

It was 4-0 on 80 minutes and Robinson again showed his quality in front of goal, he was sent clear by Matt Bennion’s pass and he finished clinically past a stranded Hugo.

Armadale were looking for more and Madeley found a rampaging Robinson on 83 minutes, but this time the striker fired inches wide of the post from the edge of the box.

Swans earned themselves a consolation goal in the 85th minute, Ando’s free kick was misjudged by Geerlings and it rebounded into the net off the unfortunate Reds defender Mark Darby.

Second half substitute Alex Cocking almost pulled another goal back for the visitors late on, but his shot at the back post went into the side netting.

A great victory for Armadale and Coach Brad Hassell was delighted. “With results elsewhere it looks we’re safe and we want to finish the season off strongly and today showed that. We played some good football and James and Nao were outstanding today up front, but our defence were also good protecting our 17-year-old keeper Beau Geerlings,” said Hassell.

Swans Coach Paul Lincoln was disappointed after the game. “We weren’t at the races today, I told the boys after the game technically we were very poor today, including some of our senior players.

“Robinson killed us today he was quality, not too many players I’ve seen this year can do what he did to our defence today, he had us at sixes and sevens all afternoon, he was a different class,” said Lincoln

29.08.08 - Reds hope to continue their good form against the Swans

The Reds are back home at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday when they entertain Swan IC in round 19 of the Football West Premier League (3pm)

Brad Hassell’s side won a good point at Mandurah City last, while Saturday’s visitors, Swans, beat their nearest rivals Fremantle Spirit 3-1 at Francis Street.

Hassell was delighted with his sides’ performance at the Hyundai Stadium. “It was an excellent point last week; we started really well and continued on with it through out the game. We were well worth a draw and not many teams have gone down there and got a point so I was very pleased,” said Hassell.

The Swans are yet to win on the road this season and Hassell hopes to continue that on Saturday. “The way we’ve been playing I believe we can challenge anyone in the league, and our recent results have shown that. If we come out with the right attitude we are confident we will get the required result on Saturday,” explained Hassell.

In team news keeper Cyril Sharrock (left) and defender Daryl Platten are suspended so Beau Geerlings will come in between the sticks, other wise the Reds are at full strength.

The Swans are coming off back-back home victories against Western Knights and Fremantle Spirit but have struggled on the road. Aaron Cole holds together the backline with former state keeper Cory Hugo in fine form. Damian Scali is their top goalscorer with 17 goals and his partnership with youngster Alex Cocking will both have to be watched by the Reds defence.

Last Time we met the Swans at Alfred Skeet Oval

Reds 3 Swan IC 2 - Round 7 2007

The last time we met the Swans at Alfred Skeet Oval was in round 7 last season when the Reds won their first game of the Premier League season, 3-2 in a fiercely contested encounter.

Sustained early pressure from the home side was rewarded after 11 minutes when Scott Paterson’s free-kick found an unmarked Darren Kingston who headed in at close-range. Armadale’s dominance resulted in a second goal on 32 minutes as Kodi Madeley’s cross was spilt by Daniel Agudelo and in the blink of an eye Jason Goodwin (Right) had lashed the ball in from close-range.

Swan responded through the very next attack in which Tom Shepheard delivered the ball from the left for John Monterosso to fire past Cyril Sharrock. It was only now that the visitors came to life and not long after they were had appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Matthew Cheeseman.

Swan laid siege to their opponent’s goal as Sharrock gathered possession under pressure from Shepheard, and Dom Ando fired high when well positioned. A deserved equaliser arrived ten minutes from half-time when Justin Hugo’s cross was poorly dealt with by the defence allowing Brendan Knox to find the net from five-yards. Shortly before the interval Swan lost Agudelo after he clashed with Kingston and was rushed to hospital suffering a lower back injury.

The second half began with Swan in full flight and McStea went close to putting the visitors ahead twice in as many minutes. However, Armadale weren’t to be outdone and Goodwin fired wide while another Kingston header flashed the wrong side of the post.

The 66th minute produced the deciding goal via a quick counterattack in which Stephen Skilandis’ (left) deep cross was put away by Kingston. Swan worked tirelessly in their search for a third goal but found it difficult to break down a defence under the command of Dusan Macura and Daryl Platten.

Darby fitting in well at the Reds

When Mark Darby joined the Reds from fellow Premier League side Fremantle Spirit it was return home for the defender. He spent his junior career with Armadale at Morgan Park and a return home was a great move for the former WA state defender. “Coming back to the Army has been really good even with a slow start the fans keep coming, showing support which helps a lot. There is nothing to dislike about this club on and off the pitch, especially when playing with a quality group of players,” said Darby.

After a poor start the Reds have improved over recent weeks and the return of Gary Faria and the signing of new imports James Robinson and John Lund has given the club more impitus. “I would say both Gary and the new imports have had a decent impact towards the way we have been playing in the second half of the season, but also some tactical changes by Brad such as formation and positions has also helped and we hope we can have a strong finish to the season, starting against Swan IC on Saturday,” explained Darby.

With Brad Hassell in charge of his first Premier League side the 21-year-old has been impressed with the former Perth Glory midfielder. “Brad has been good, there’s a good interaction between him and the players. With the experience he has got as a footballer himself he knows if players are in form or not and he variates training sessions well week to week which makes it enjoyable for all,” added Darby.

Hassell has been happy with Darby’s contributions this season and believes he has added some stability to the Reds backline. “Mark has done well since joining us. He’s played through injuries this season which is a credit to him and he has been solid in the back line. The club are more than happy with his return home after a couple of years at Fremantle,” said Hassell.

The defender struggled with injury last season and early this, but he hopes to keep playing until an operation in the summer. “I had a slight injury in the ankle at the start of the pre season with some loose bone floating round, but luckily its stayed away and I’ve been able to get on with it. I’ll probably get it fixed in the off season,” said Darby.

Darby, an electrician, has formed a solid backline at the Reds but is happy to have experienced keeper Cyril Sharrock behind him in the last line of defence. “Cyril is a great character to have around the club. He’s a good laugh and when serious he’s a top keeper as you know and is very vocal at keeping the back line in front of him organised and he’s definitely made some great saves to keep us in the game,” added Darby.

He had an interrupted pre-season after travelling to Asia, a holiday Darby would like to repeat. “I had a great trip backpacking round Cambodia/Vietnam for 4 weeks partying it up and meeting new people and seeing new sights. I enjoyed it that much I’ll be heading back this year to visit a different part of Asia and do it all again,” commented Darby.

24.08.08 - Robinson gives Reds a point at Mandurah by Scoop Rafferty

Mandurah City 2 Reds 2

Armadale fought back twice in the second half to hold Top four contenders Mandurah City to a two all draw at Hyundai Stadium today. The Reds started brightly and dominated early. They went close on 10 minutes Ryan Pearson found Nao Oishi free on the left, but the striker’s square ball into the box failed to find an Armadale boot and was easily cleared by the Mandurah defence.

Mandurah keeper Mike Green had a stroke of luck minutes later when he handled clearly outside the box when under pressure from Oishi but Referee Mathew Cheeseman waved play on. It took 18 minutes before Mandurah created an opening and fine work between Christian Paschkewitz and Jeff Bright found the leagues top goalscorer Phil O'Callaghan and his cross also failed to find a team mate in the box. In the 25th minute Armadale defender Matt Bennion gave the ball away 30-yards out and Andy Brown hit the ball first time but his powerful strike thudded back off the crossbar.

On the half hour Armadale keeper Cyril Sharrock took a free kick just inside his own half and his perfectly weighted pass reached Shannon Dally whose shirt was pulled back by James Hesketh and Cheeseman awarded the penalty. Gary Faria (right) took the spot kick but fired well over keeper Mike Green and into the Mandurah car park. Armadale's last chance before half time was a Bennion cross that Oishi headed back to James Robinson who hooked his shot just over from seven-yards.

Mandurah opened brightly in the second half and took the lead in the 49th minute when a slick pass by Jay Bonsor found O'Callaghan clear and though under pressure from Bennion and Andy Bowyer he calmly placed the ball past the advancing Sharrock.

Armadale responded quickly and minutes later a stinging 20-yard shot from Daryl Platten was tipped around the post by the alert Green and from the resulting corner Armadale were back on level terms. Gary Faria found Kodi Madeley (left) in space and his angled right foot volley into the top corner had the home keeper clutching at air.

Mandurah responded straight from the kick off and Andy Brown was brought down just inside the box by Bowyer and O'Callaghan made no mistake from the spot sending Sharrock the wrong way to restore Mandurah's lead.

Armadale were then denied a penalty minutes later when Bonsor jumped all over Oishi, but the referee waved away their protests. The Reds were dominating and Bonsor was again the culprit when he fouled Madeley just outside the box, but Faria's free kick was pushed over the bar by Green. Mandurah were reduced to 10 men when Chris Currie dragged down James Robinson when he was clear on goal, and they scored a deserved equalizer in the 75th minute. Madeley's chip found Robinson (right) who beat the offside trap and he calmly volleyed a right foot shot wide of Green.

Armadale threw everyone forward in the remaining 10 minutes but despite numerous free kicks and corners the Mandurah defence held firm. Mandurah still looked dangerous on the counter attack and Andy Pomfret made two brave tackles denying O'Callaghan and Brown. Mandurah thought they had the winner five minutes from time when Brown found Cuthbert free on the far post but he somehow fired over from one-yard. Armadale's last chance fell to Faria but his free kick was saved easily by the home keeper.

22.08.08 - Reds head south to face the Dolphins in round 18

The Reds travel to the Hyundai Stadium the home of Mandurah City on Saturday in round 18 of the Football West Premier League. (3pm) The Reds, who were beaten 1-9 by the Dolphins at home in round 7 and will look to gain some revenge on Saturday, a victory would almost certainly make their Premier League survival secure.

Reds Coach Brad Hassell is hoping to continue on were they left off against ECU Joondalup last week. “We performed well last week and it was good to turn around the poor performance against Perth and we put something into place and it worked well for us and we hope to continue with that against Mandurah,” said Hassell.

Hassell is looking forward to the game as well as the players. “We’re looking forward to the game; last time we met we had six first players unavailable and Mandurah dominated. We’ve picked up a few quality players in the meantime, and they’ve lost a few quality players. If we go down there with the right attitude I think we can come away with something,” added Hassell.

In team news John Lund is unavailable, as the midfielder has had to fly back to the UK for personnel reasons. Mo Atak (left) is available again after suspension, and Andy Pomfret is fully fit to play against their former club.

Mandurah have performed well in their first season in the Premier League and are looking to get in to the top four. They will be missing their top goalscorer Phil O’Callaghan who is unavailable, but have a good line up. Midfielder Andy Brown has been outstanding this season along with former Glory defender Ryan Townsend. They are coming off a 4-4 draw last week against Fremantle Spirit, were they came back from 1-4 down to pinch a point of the Reds nearest challenger.

Pearson and Harvey selected in the Glory Youth side

The Reds are pleased to announce that Ryan Pearson and former junior player Liam Harvey have both been selected in the inaugural Perth Glory youth squad which will take part in the A-League youth league starting next month.

Pearson, who went overseas to the UK last season, has come back a stronger player and his performances lately have been outstanding. Reds Coach Brad Hassell was delighted for the youngster. “We wished Ryan all the best after training on Thursday it’s a big step for him but I believe he will do well. He started off slowly this season but has come on leaps and bounds over the past two months, and you can see with the extra training he has blossomed well this season. We hope he can continue his good form for the remainder of the season for Armadale,” said Hassell.

Harvey is currently a member of the Football West NTC squad, but he came up through the junior ranks at Morgan Park, and his farther Terry is still a big Reds fan and watches them when ever he can.

Reds President Bill Easton was delighted for the pair. “It’s a great achievement for both the boy’s. They have really worked hard in the trials and have had to put in a lot of extra training sessions and all their hard work has been worth it. On behalf of the club I’d like to wish them all the best in their future endeavours,” said Easton.

Last time we met Mandurah at Peelwood Parade.

Mandurah City 2 Armadale 2 - Division one Round 24 - 11.09.04

The Reds have never played Mandurah in the Premier league at Peelwood Parade, but the last time we met the Dolphins it was in our Division One title winning season. When the home side came closest to inflicting, only the second defeat of the season on the runaway First Division leading Reds.

Armadale were quickest out of the starting blocks and caused the home defence all manner of difficulties during the opening stages, but once Mandurah settled it was game on. In a fairly even and hard fought match Armadale took the lead after 33 minutes when a shot by Dennis Lee from outside the box deflected off a defender and past goalkeeper Michael Green.

Four minutes later Mandurah were back in the hunt after a good passage of play ended with Christian Paschewitz slamming the ball into the roof of the net. Midway through the second half Paschewitz was upended on the edge of the 18-yard box, and from the resultant free-kick Mo Atak found the target to put the hosts in the box seat.

With victory within reach Mandurah let slip maximum points when an elementary defensive blunder allowed Paul Colkin to put Armadale back on level terms. The 2-2 scoreline was a fair reflection on a day when there was little between the sides who both gave their all right up to the final whistle.

18.08.08 - Reds stunned by sudden death of Mr Andrew Johnson

Mr Andrew Johnson 1950 - 2008

The Armadale Soccer Club is mourning today with the sudden death of one the clubs major sponsor and former committee member Andrew Johnson. Mr Johnson passed away suddenly today at the age of 58.

Andrew provided the club great energy in his role on the committee last season and his company Westralian Pty Ltd has been a major sponsor of the club for a number of years. He hasn’t been involved as much this season with his son Matt leaving this season, but his company continued to be one of the clubs major sponsors.

Reds President Billy Easton was shell shocked. “It’s a sad day for Armadale SC, Andrew gave his all for this club and his sudden departure has left us all gutted. On behalf of the club I’d like to send condolences to his wife Irene and his family,” said Easton

17.08.08 - Vital win for Reds against ECU by Mark Rafferty

Armadale secured a vital three points in their fight against relegation with an entertaining 4-2 victory over a brave 10 man ECU Joondalup at Alfred Skeet Oval.

Things began badly for the visitors when keeper Bobson Karoma was given a red card only three minutes into the match after pulling down Japanese striker Nao Oishi in the box. ECU had to quickly reorganize their side and John Walmsley was sacrificed for back up keeper Chris McCrone. The new keeper became an instant hero when he easily saved English import James Robinson's penalty low to his right.

Armadale continued to press forward and in form winger Ryan Pearson (left) fired two long range efforts well over the bar. ECU took the lead on 18 minutes through a penalty of there own when a Garin Collins cross found Ian McMurray who was then held back by Armadale centre half Daryl Platten. McMurray made no mistake from the spot putting it low to Cyril Sharrock's right.

ECU started to dominate with John Thornley, Tommy Amphlett and McMurray causes headaches for the Army defence. But Armadale equalised on 38 minutes when Pearson found Robinson and his well struck shot took a deflection off Craig Simpson giving McCrone no chance. Joondalup almost regained the lead on half time when a Collins free kick deflected off the Armadale wall and clipped the outside of the post with Sharrock watching helplessly.

After half time Armadale began to take advantage of the extra man and played the ball wide to Pearson and the hard running Shannon Dally. It was no surprise when Armadale took the lead when a Gary Faria corner was headed in by an unmarked Robinson from eight yards. Midfielder Kodi Madeley (right) made it 3-1 on 58 minutes who found space in the box after a Platten cross and he calmly slotted the ball past McCrone.

Joondalup never gave up and a fine effort from Amphlett when he found Collins who fired past Sharrock from close range still gave them hope. ECU had the momentum and a Collins free kick found Darren Broxton whose goal bound shot was parried away by the home keeper. Sharrock was again in the action on 82 minutes after a John Thornley attempt on goal but Armadale finally killed off any chance for ECU when a Shannon Dally cross in the 89th minute was dipping under the post and McCrone could only palm the ball to substitute Joe Brunetto who slid the ball home for the final goal of the match.

15.08.08 - ECU visit Alfred Skeet in Round 17

After last weeks disappointing 0-3 loss at Perth SC Brad Hassell’s side face a big clash against ECU Joondalup at Alfred Skeet Oval in round 17 of the Football West Premier league on Saturday (3pm)

“We were very disappointing last week, we lacked the desire and urgency which we had had in the previous weeks but we hope it was just a one off,” said Hassell.

On the ECU game Hassell believes it’s the most vital game of the season for his side, with Fremantle Spirit picking up recent points. “We are aware of Spirit’s position and they earnt a point against ECU last week. We’re going to change a few things from last week and we’ve trained with that in mind this week and the players are looking forward to a big game on Saturday, “said Hassell.

In team news the Reds are at full strength and will fancy their chances with keeper Cyril Sharrock (left) in superb form and midfield duo John Lund and Gary Faria finding form Brad Hassell’s side can’t afford to let any points slip on Saturday, it should be a great game.

ECU Joondalup travels south to with only three points in mind after dropping out of the top four recently. They had skipper Ian McMurray to thank for salvaging a point last week against Fremantle and the big striker will be vital on Saturday. They will be without Craig Young, who nearly joined Armadale in the summer, and Martin Ashworth, the pair both suspended.

Last time we met ECU Joondalup at Alfred Skeet Oval

Armadale 0 ECU Joondalup 6 – Round 16 – 11.08.07

The last time the Reds played ECU Joondalup at Alfred Skeet Oval, Marc Anthony played the leading role in the visitors 6-0 demolition.

Anthony, a former youth team player at Glasgow Celtic, scored twice and had a hand in the remaining four goals to keep Joondalup in the hunt for a top five finish. Armadale's miserable day out was compounded by second half red cards to Matt Bennion and Jason Goodwin (right).

Joondalup made their intentions clear from the outset as Jon Higgins and Tommy Amphlett blazed wide early on. Their enterprise was rewarded on 18 minutes when Anthony's wonderful curling free-kick was beyond the reach of young goalkeeper Matt Johnson and into the top corner. The home team were finding it difficult to break down a solid defensive line led by David Abel, and their only chance of the period came the way of Ben Howe whose powerful drive from 15-metres rattled the frame of the goal.

Minutes out from half-time Anthony unleashed a cracking shot from distance which Johnson pushed onto the crossbar and the rebound fell kindly for Craig Young to tap in at close-range.

On 52 minutes Anthony charged into attack and cut the ball back to Amphlett who turned his marker and expertly fired into the net. In an eight minute spell Armadale totally wrote themselves out of the game as Bennion was dismissed for lashing out at an opponent, and Goodwin was issued his second yellow for a crunching tackle on Anthony. Goal number four came shortly after as Ian McMurray headed in a delightful cross from Anthony.

On 84 minutes Young was brought down inside the 18-yard box by Darryl Platten and Anthony cheekily converted the resulting spot kick. And with the full-time whistle approaching Anthony and Higgins combined well down the left to deliver a cross to the back post where McMurray completed the rout by angling his shot under the 'keeper.

The Reds best efforts fell to Japanese import Niro Oishi who failed to make contact in the box and Ryan Pearson who fired over from eight-yards in the second half. (Full report Later)

08.08.08 - Reds face Perth SC in Round 16

After last weeks 1-1 draw with Floreat Athena the Reds face another difficult task when they meet Perth SC at Dorrien Gardens in round 16 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday. (3pm)

Reds Coach Brad Hassell was happy with last week’s performance but hope they can keep 11 players on the park this week. “Yes it was a good point last week, but we are struggling to keep all our players on the pitch. We had Kodi sent off last week; again it was probably a decision that hasn’t gone our way. But we seemed to lift when we were down to ten men and we fought the game out well and deservedly equalised to get a point from the match,” said Hassell.

John Lund returned last week and was excellent in midfield and Hassell hopes he can continue it. “We moved him into the centre of midfield and he did a good job last week, and we’ll see if we go that way on Saturday. He’s been a great addition to the side,” said Hassell.

Hassell is looking forward to the Perth game and believes it’s a game his players are really looking forward to. “They are missing Andreas Oliviera through injury which is a bonus for us, but we wish him all the best in his recovery, he’s a great player. We’ve had our fair share of injuries so far this season but we are at full strength, so it is probably a good time to play them, we’ll go there with the same attitude as we did against Athena and we’ll see what happens,” said Hassell.

In team news Kodi Madeley, Jason Goodwin and Joe Brunetto are missing due to suspension and Andy Pomfret (left) and Marlon Ramirez are struggling with injury and will face a late fitness test.

Perth is coming off a surprising 1-1 draw against bottom of the table Fremantle Spirit last week and will look to bounce back this week. David Onoforo has been leading the line well for Graham Normanton’s side but lacked help last week. Greg Sharland has been in great form along with former Armadale player Peter Lord while David Price has returned after his ‘Football Superstar’ appearance on Fox 8 to strengthen the midfield. Gareth Deeg has been in good form between the sticks while former Armadale junior Trent Kay and Gianfranco Circati have been good at the back.

Last time we met Perth SC at Dorrien Gardens

Perth SC 3 Armadale 0 – Round 1 – 14.04.07

The last time we met Perth SC at Dorrien Gardens, the home side broke down a resilient Reds side 3-0 in a hard-fought contest.

The balance of first half possession was well and truly in favour of the home side thanks largely to the commanding presence of then Perth midfielder Gary Faria and Scott Bulloch. Nikita Rukavytsya, Andreas Oliveira, Faria and Michael Icanovski each placed shots either the wrong side of the target or which were saved by goalkeeper Cyril Sharrock (right).

Armadale’s main avenue into attack was on the counterattack and while they did at times threaten the visitors were undone by poor delivery in the final third. The reward for Perth’s dominance arrived a minute from the interval when Faria threaded a neat pass in behind the defence for Bulloch to race in and slot past the advancing ‘keeper.

The pattern of the second half mirrored that of the first with Perth controlling play and Armadale reliant on the occasional quick break. The margin was doubled on 67 minutes when Rukavytsya used his pace to get clear of his marker and blast into the net.

Armadale responded with some positional and tactical changes aimed at getting them back into the game, however, Perth were having none of it and refused to relinquish control. Faria thought he’d bagged the hosts third by unleashing a rocket from the edge of the 18-yard box to which Sharrock produced a truly world-class save.

The sealer arrived in the 85th minute when Todd Howarth sent the ball into a crowded area when Rukavytsya scored an early contender for goal of the year with a sensational bicycle kick from near the penalty spot. The closing stages had Armadale see more of the ball and gain several corners, none of which called Gareth Deeg into action.

03.08.08 - Robinson earns Reds a point - Report by Mark Rafferty

A superb 78th minute strike by English import James Robinson earned Armadale another valuable point in a game dominated by both clubs defensive qualities. The 1st half provided little for fans to get enthusiastic about but Daniel Niederberger should have scored on the half hour for the visitors but Armadale keeper Cyril Sharrock spread himself brilliantly forcing the Floreat goal sneak to scoop his shot well over the bar from eight-yards.

New Zealander Brad Scott found himself in an identical position five minutes later but his flick with the outside of his left foot again flew well over much to the disgust of the away side's impatient fans. Apart from a Gary Faria corner to the far post that Robinson headed into the side netting Floreat Keeper Vas Vujacic had little to do till the 43rd minute when Robinson found Shannon Dally clear on the right wing but his low shot from the corner of the box was parried away to safety.

Armadale's midfield magnificently led by John Lund started to dominate and they should have taken the lead after 52 minutes when the ball threaded through a crowded goalmouth and Marlon Ramirez was unable to get the final touch that would have surely deflected past Vas Vujacic.

The game finally game to life in the 58th minute when Floreat's Branimir Mikulic chipped the ball over keeper Sharrock and Brad Scott tapped in on the goal line. Armadale looked to the linesman to no avail and the goal stood.

Armadale's hope's of a comeback looked gone when Kodi Madeley was sent for an early bath on the hour, but after Gary Faria (right) fired over from close-range and Robinson was denied a penalty after being bundled over by Ante Kovacevic they got a deserved equaliser in the 78th minute.

Sharrock's controlled clearance was met by substitute Nao Oishi whose clever header was anticipated by Robinson (left) who under pressure from Kovacevic allowed the ball to bounce once before unleashing a powerful shot low to Vas Vujacic's right from 18-yards.

Although exasperated with the officiating, Armadale’s Brad Hassell had nothing but praise for his sides second half performance:

“As always we were outdone by the refereeing, as always. What can you do about it? You’ve just got to get on with it. At the end of the day we dug deep and earned a point and on another day it could have been three. I can’t take anything away from that second half performance.”

Floreat Athena Coach Michael Roki was happy with the point at the end of the day. “A draw was a fair result. I thought we had the better chances in the first half but then right on the break we are lucky not to be a goal down. The second half opened up a little bit and both sides had chances to win the game.”

02.08.08 - Robinson earns Reds a point

A goal from English import James Robinson earned the Reds a hard fought 1-1 draw against the in form Floreat Athena in round 15 of the Football West Premier League at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday.

Athena arrived in good form having won their last four games moving them to second on the table but the Reds had improved over recent weeks and the game was even in the first half with chances at both ends but it was 0-0 at the break.

The visitors hit the front on 58 minutes when Branimir Mikulic scored and things became worse for Brad Hassell’s side when Kodi Madeley was sent off shortly after. The 10-men Reds battled hard in heavy conditions with John Lund outstanding and they should have levelled on 73 minutes but Gary Faria fired over, but five minutes later they were level.

A long clearance from keeper Cyril Sharrock found Naohiro Oishi, who in turn found Robinson (left). The striker still had a lot to do, but he outpaced former Perth Glory defender Ante Kovacevic, and fired low past Vas Vujacic from the edge of the box, much to the delight of the Army faithful. (Full report later)

In other games Phil Campher’s under 18’s went down 1-7 to second on the table Floreat Athena, while Ken Jarvis’ under 23’s won 2-1 against Athena.

01.08.08 - Reds face 2007 Champions in round 15

The Reds were seconds away from a victory at Cockburn City last week before drawing 2-2, this week they entertain last season’s champions Floreat Athena in round 15 of the Football West Premier League at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday (3pm).

Reds coach Brad Hassell would have been happy with the point before the game but to be two minutes away from victory was a little disappointing. “The first half last week was probably all Cockburn’s, but we changed a few things second half and we took the game to them and played well

“We scored late through Ryan Pearson and we thought we’d won it, and I think we got a bit nervous and we couldn’t stop them coming at us and they scored in stoppage time, and as a coach it’s the worst time to concede a goal,” said Hassell.

Hassell is looking forward to the clash against Athena to see where is team are at. “We took a great deal of confidence from last week’s performance and we are happy to play anyone at the moment. Floreat have good players all over the park so it will be a big challenge for us, but we’ve surprised a few teams recently and with Athena on a good run they might take us lightly and think the points are there’s already.

“The players are looking forward to the clash and hope to continue on with our improvement,” said Hassell.

In team news John Lund and Jason Goodwin (left) return from suspension and Marlon Ramirez from injury, while Andy Pomfret is also close to a return, and the Reds will fancy their chances in causing an upset.

Michael Roki’s side sit in second spot on the table and head south after a 4-1 home win against Fremantle Spirit. The return of Brad Scott last week gave them each fire power up front, but it’s been in defence that they have excelled. They have only conceded 17 goals this campaign the best in the league, with Ante Kovacevic and John Migas outstanding.

Roki is hoping to continue their push to reclaim the title. “Every game is now a cup final for us from here, as it probably is for all the top half of the table.

“We’re expecting a really tough encounter against a much improved side with some new faces that are obviously starting to gel together. Our first meeting at Litis was a close affair we expect nothing different down at Alfred skeet.

“Obviously there is a lot at stake with Perth and Sorrento expected to win, so we will have nothing on the mind but bringing home all three points,” said Roki.

The games kicks off with the under 18’s at 11am, the 23’s at 1pm with the first team game at 3pm. Admission prices are $8 adults, $5 concessions and under 15’s are admitted free. Get along and support the Reds!!!!!

Last time we met Athena at Alfred Skeet Oval

Armadale 3 Athena 5 – Round 22 – September 28 th 2007

The last time the Reds met Floreat Athena at Alfred Skeet Oval, a stunning hat-trick by Josip Magdic orchestrated Athena’s 5-3, come-from-behind victory.

The win was the icing on the cake of a remarkable season by Floreat who became the first team in a decade to complete the home and away series without loss. It was a nervous opening by Floreat who went a goal down on eight minutes through a cracking strike from 22-metres by Graham Herd that was simply too good for goalkeeper Alex Dunn.

Things only got better for the home side as, two minutes later, Jason Goodwin provided the ball to Herd whose speculative shot from the left found the top corner. But the home fans fell silent within four minutes as Miki Vujacic’s cross from the right found Magdic whose crisp volley from the edge of the area reduced the gap.

Dunn came up trumps in a one-on-one with Goodwin to prevent Armadale from regaining their two-goal advantage. Parity was restored ten minutes from half-time when a Mikulic cross caused panic in the home defence and allowed Garin Collins to nip in an had past Cyril Sharrock.

Floreat picked up where they left after the break with Magdic forcing a good save from Sharrock. Armadale’s failure to clear a 55th minute cross was punished by Magdic who bravely headed past Sharrock to put the visitors in front.

A charging run from the halfway line on 77 minutes took Magdic past the defence before unleashing a stunning strike from 15-metres to which Sharrock had no response. Three minutes later and Armadale were back in the game as Stephen Skilandis sent Darryl Platten (left) down the right to rifle past Dunn. The points were made safe in the 85th minute as Mikulic threaded a pass to Rafael Insurralde who cut inside the box before slamming his shot into roof of the net.

Madeley enjoying life back at the Reds

A season of promise last year for Reds defensive midfielder Kodi Madeley turned to one of frustration as the then 19-year-old left the club after a disagreement with Coach Billy Russell. “It real got to me last season and when you don’t get on with your coach it’s pointless staying around. That was the case I didn’t get on with Billy and I wasn’t enjoying my football, so I made the hard decision to leave,” said Madeley.

With a new Coach on board this season, Brad Hassell, Madeley had to re-gain the faith of his team mates and the new coach and all seems to be going to plan with Madeley in good form in the Reds recent improvement. “We started slowly this season with players injured and we also had a few players that didn’t fit the bill that have since moved on. We have worked hard on the track and with the new players fitting in well our results have improved,” said Madeley.

The return of Gary Faria has been a big influence in the Reds line up and Madeley believes along with the new imports is one reason why the Reds are on the improve. “Gary has been great since he’s returned, he’s still good for an old boy, and he’s great to play along side. He works really hard and gets stuck in and his experience in the NSL is something you can learn a great deal from,” said Madeley.

The Reds have brought over a number of imports over the years and Madeley believe the recent signings are good players. “Alex Williams was a superb player when he came over last season, and John Lund and James Robinson are both going OK and fitting in well with the rest of the players,” said Madeley.

New Coach Hassell has had a frustrating start to his Premier League coaching career but Madeley believes he’s been great for the Alfred Skeet Oval club. “Brad is a great bloke and he’s a good coach. I believe he’s still good enough to play with the side but he’s made the decision to coach and you’ve got to respect his decision,” said Madeley.

It’s a different set up this season and the 20-year-old is enjoying life again. “I’m enjoying it at the club at the moment, and I’m enjoying my role in the middle of the park. Brad’s training sessions are excellent and were always working with the ball which is better than running bloody laps of the pitch all night,” commented Madeley.

The former Gosnells City and Swan IC player has had a number of people who have influenced his career and he hopes to repay them with a good end to the 2008 season. “My mum and dad have been great for me and have been there every step of the way. Lou Campos and Peter Murphy have also helped me greatly with my football and I would like to thank them,” explained Madeley.

26.07.08 - Reds denied by late Cockburn strike

The Reds conceded a late goal to draw 2-2 against Cockburn City in round 14 of the Football West Premier League at Dalmatinac Park. Reds reporter Mark Rafferty sent this report.

Cockburn City 2 Armadale 2

On a delightful day for football, Cockburn City started brightly and had Armadale on the back foot from the opening whistle with Mileta Miletic and Johnny Mirco going close in the first 15 minutes and it came as no surprise when they took the lead in the 26th minute. The lively Mirco went on goal unchallenged and produced a thunderous shot that left the Armadale keeper Cyril Sharrock helpless.

It stung Armadale into action and they equalized after 37 minutes with a neat passage of play between James Robinson and Garia Faria. Faria's final pass was weighted perfectly and Robinson (right) gave Cockburn keeper Nick Feely no chance from 18-yards.

Cockburn had a great chance to regain the lead moments later but Jason Godfrey had his header cleared off the line by Kodi Madeley and Mirco fired just wide on the stroke of half time.

Both sides came out looking for the three points up for grabs and both set of fans were entertained by end to end football. Both sides created numerous chances with Ryan Pearson and Jason Goodwin going close for Armadale and Mirco's fierce drive clipping the bar in the 65th minute.

Faria and Madeley fired over and Mark Darby cleared off the line for Armadale in the 75th minute as the game ebbed and flowed. Goodwin clipped the outside of the post in the 79th minute and a bad pass by Pearson put Mirco clear but Matt Bennion produced a timely tackle.

With the game heading for a draw Daryl Platten somehow squeezed in a cross in the 88th minute and Pearson (left) had time to place his header wide of Feely. Armadale fans were in full song but Cockburn City silenced them in the last minute when Miletic was left unmarked at the far post and he smashed the ball past Sharrock from a wide angle.

That wasn’t the end of the chances and with the final kick of the match Mirco could have won the game for Cockburn but his shot bounced off the post into Sharrock's grateful arms.

Reds Coach Brad Hassell was happy with the point. “We allowed them too much space in the first half, we were much better in the second. We played the game in their half and stopped messing about with it at the back. A little disappointed to be leading 2-1 with two minutes to go but at the start of the day you would have to be happy with a point away from home against a very good side,” said Hassell.

25.07.08 - Reds head to Dalmatinac Park full of confidence

The stunning second half comeback against Sorrento last week, sees the Reds head to Dalmatinac Park on Saturday full of confidence for the round 14 game against Cockburn City in the Football West Premier League (3pm)

Brad Hassell was delighted with his side’s comeback against Sorrento and he believes they are heading in the right direction. “We showed a great deal of character to fight back from 0-2 at half time and with us down to ten men. I was really proud of the group of players who all gave me everything in the game against the league leaders, and the referee,” said Hassell.

The Coach is looking forward to Saturday’s game. “We head their full of confidence, and with them slipping up last week at Fremantle Spirit, we fancy our chances. We must go there with the right attitude and hopefully we can carry on with our current form,” added Hassell.

In team news Gary Lund and Mo Atak are still unavailable, and Scott Devine is missing after his unfortunate sending off last week. Andy Pomfret (left) is close to fitness and may come in to the squad this week along with Jason Goodwin, while Japanese import Naohiro Oishi, who made his starting league debut last week, should regain his spot after a good performance.

Cockburn City slipped up last week drawing 2-2 at bottom of the table Fremantle Spirit and they will look to rebound against the Reds. Mirko Jeilic’s side led twice last week but failed to hold on to the lead and their defensive frailties have come to the surface in recent weeks conceding 16 goals in their last four games. Liam Lilly missed last week’s game and they will hope he returns to partner Jason Godfrey at the heart of the defence.

Last time we met the Cockerels at Dalmatinac Park

Cockburn City 2 Armadale 1 – Round 12 – 07.07.07

The last time the Reds met Cockburn City at Dalmatinac Park the home side remained amongst the leading pack following their 2-1 defeat of a gallant Armadale.

A couple of early strike secured the home side the points despite a second half rally from the visitors produced a deserved goal through Jason Goodwin (right). The midfield pace of Aaron Dos Santos and Adam Surjan were particularly damaging in the opening stages as Cockburn went in search of the opening goal. It arrived through Darryl Platten who had the misfortune of turning the ball into his own net after Cyril Sharrock parried a vicious strike by Paul Natale.

The visitors could have drawn level only minutes later with Neil Gawley and Ryan Pearson wasting golden opportunities after getting into great positions. Cockburn on the other hand were clinical in their finishing and midfielder Aaron Dos Santos doubled the difference by unleashing a long-range shot which cannoned in off the inside of the post.

Armadale’s passionate and vocal supporters were undeterred and continued to urge their team on as they searched for an avenue to goal. The visitors returned after the break determined to reduce the deficit but claims for a penalty were dismissed after Jason Goodwin’s effort appeared to strike the arm of Liam Lilly.

As the half progressed the pressure on Cockburn grew and Dino Pacella was called upon to make a number of timely intercepts. Their persistence was rewarded in the 72nd minute when Marlon Ramirez drove forward and threaded a pass through the defence to Jason Goodwin who poked his shot in at close-range. The visitors upped their quest for an equaliser by throwing everyone forward but ‘keeper Pacella was up to the task and with the very last play of the afternoon smothered Steven Skilandis’s (left) shot from point blank range.

Reds stun leaders to earn a point

Armadale 2 Sorrento 2

A remarkable second half come back from a ten man Armadale, saw them draw 2-2 against league leaders Sorrento in round 13 of the Football West Premier League at Alfred Skeet Oval. The Gulls looked to have the game sewn up at half-time courtesy of Todd Harnwell and Stuart Montgomery, however, Armadale aren't a team to under-estimate as evidence by goals in quick succession from Daryl Platten and Ryan Pearson 9right).

With Reds Coach Brad Hassell up against his former club he know it would be a tough test, and they opened brightly and almost took a 3rd minute lead after James Robinson flicked on a low cross which Nao Oishi, who was making his starting debut for the Reds, fired into the side netting. The Gulls then put the Reds defence under pressure, with veteran striker Montgomery and Harnwell causing problems, and on six minutes Montgomery fell under a challenge from Platten and referee Ton Klaver pointed to the spot.

It was a harsh decision but Cyril Sharrock (left) came to the Reds rescue saving Montgomery’s spot kick much to the delight of the Armadale faithful. But it wasn’t long before Sorrento’s pressure did pay dividens with the lead on eight minutes.

Montgomery made amends for his missed penalty by sending the ball to Brodie Martin whose cross from the left was fired in by Harnwell. Armadale's day worsened in the 29th minute with Scott Devine's dismissal for handling a Harnwell header on the line, then Montgomery rubbed salt into the wound by converting from the spot. Although by far the dominant force, Sorrento struggled against a well-drilled backline consisting of Matt Bennion, Mark Darby and Shannon Dally, while Sharrock was in inspirational form.

With coach Hassell’s half time address still ringing in their ears, the ten men Reds opened the second half well and Platten breathed new life into the contest on 48 minutes by slamming into the roof of the net a rebound from Dally's free-kick.

It got better for the Armadale faithful when midfielder Gary Faria laid on the equaliser six minutes later, crossing to the unmarked Pearson, and the youngster made no mistake powering his header past keeper Neil Young.

Steve Neville’s side had an appeal for what would have been a third penalty dismissed by referee Klaver after Harnwell appeared to be tripped when chasing down Lewis Flatt's long ball. Shaun Kilkelly thought he'd grabbed Sorrento a winner by sending the ball into Sharrock's net on 79 minutes, but his effort was disallowed by an offside flag. The Reds 'keeper then came to their rescue shortly before the final whistle when he spectacularly tipped Harnwell's goalbound header around the post. The Reds held on for a well earned point against the league leaders.

20.07.08 - Sharrock shines as Reds hold leaders

Reds keeper Cyril Sharrock was the hero for the Reds with first half penalty save and a number of important saves as the Reds held league leaders Sorrento 2-2 at Alfred Skeet Oval in round 13 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday.

It started so well for Steve Neville’s side as they were awarded a penalty early but Reds keeper Sharrock saved Stuart Montgomery’s spot kick. But it wasn’t long before the league’s top goal scorer Todd Harnwell fired the Gulls in front after only eight minutes.

They increased their lead on the half hour through Stuart Montgomery, who this time beat Sharrock from the penalty spot after Ton Klaver sent off Scott Devine for handball in the box.

But amazingly the ten man Reds hit back, Daryl Platten scored in the 51st minute and youngster Ryan Pearson levelled eight minutes later. It was all hands to the pump for the final 15 minutes for Brad Hassell’s side, but they held on for the point. (Full report later)

18.07.08 - Reds meet league leaders in round 13

The Reds face league leaders Sorrento on Saturday at Alfred Skeet Oval in round 13 of the Football West Premier League (3pm)

An improved performance last week saw the Reds push Inglewood United all the way, but a goal five minutes from time gave the Wood the points. The sending off of John Lund after only ten minutes didn’t help but Brad Hassell was happy with the performance from the 10-men. “I believe if we had 11 v 11 we probably would have taken all three points. We started really well but the sending off was a real blow. But it didn’t stop the way we were playing and we had a number of chances but we didn’t convert. The late goal really hit us hard as we defended really well but we couldn’t hold on,” said Hassell.

On the dismissal of Lund, Hassell was disappointed. “John said he retaliated after he was struck in the face by the Inglewood player, but there’s no excuse. He’s been a good contributor for us recently and he will be missed on Saturday,” said Hassell.

The former Sorrento player and under 23’s coach, Hassell is really looking forward to the game against Steve Neville’s side. “We’ve really lifted in the past month and we’re really playing with confidence at the moment, and we go into every game expecting to win it. I’ve got a great bunch of players at the club at present and we will be hard to break down. We’ve played everyone so far this season and we know what to expect, but I’m sure we will surprise a few teams for the rest of the season,” added Hassell.

In team news Marlon Ramirez and Andy Pomfret are still in doubt but with James Robinson in fine form along with Gary Faria and Scott Devine, the Reds will fancy their chances to cause an upset.

Sorrento was pushed all the way at Fremantle Spirit last week, and veteran striker Stuart Montgomery’s double sealed victory. With keeper Neil Young in brilliant form along with Scott Bulloch and Glen Thomas the Gulls will take some beating.

A goal seven minutes from time from substitute Rodrigo Aguirre gave Inglewood a 1-0 victory over a plucky 10 man Armadale at Clipsal Stadium on Saturday.

The Reds had to play for 75 minutes with 10 men after John Lund was shown a straight red card by referee Currie for an off the ball clash with Inglewood midfielder Michael Baczynski.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Armadale side continued to pass the ball well and had the better of the opportunities in the first 45 minutes despite the score staying locked at nil all.

Gary Faria (left) forced Inglewood keeper Oliver Taseski into a diving save with a long range strike on 17 minutes before new English import James Robinson wasted a good opening; he miscontrolled a knock down from Ryan Pearson when in space before the danger was cleared.

Minutes later a Faria free kick deflected into the side netting, with the resulting corner giving Robinson a free head on goal but he couldn’t hit the target from five yards.

Inglewood looked to respond and a curled shot from inside the area by Jamie Mitsopoulos was headed into the post from point blank range by Baczynski with the rebound falling to Kevin Griffiths who spooned his shot over the bar from two yards. His embarrassment at the miss was eased by a linesman’s flag that would have disallowed the goal had it gone in.

The home side finished the half the stronger with Baczynski firing in a long range effort, James Sammut slicing through the defence to blaze high over and a wicked Jason Colli cross bouncing just over the head of Griffiths as he looked ready to pounce.

Inglewood coach Lee Bamber had a menacing look on his face as he entered the tunnel during the break however his spray must have had the desired effect as it was all one way traffic on the resumption of play.

In form attacker Sammut was in the action but must have left his shooting boots at home as he fired two shots well wide of the target. Mladen Kovacevic went a little closer; his attempt from distance was spilled for a corner by Cyril Sharrock.

On 66 minutes Griffiths had two chances to grab a goal, after the striker got his head to a Colli cross from the right, keeper Sharrock getting a slight touch as the ball came back off the cross bar. Armadale were unable to clear their lines properly, the ball eventually coming back to Griffiths who curled a shot from the edge of the area just ide of the upright.

It was to be Griffiths’ last contribution as young striker Rodrigo Aguirre replaced him, the home side desperate for the goal that would give them three points.

As Inglewood laid siege to the Armadale area, substitute Daniel Kovacevic should have given his side the lead after Aguirre dribbled into the box, his low cross found the unmarked defender on the back post but Sharrock (right) produced a fantastic block to preserve his clean sheet.

The reprieve lasted only one minute longer as the ball came straight back in following the Inglewood corner, Aguirre turning back from the by-line and curling in a sensational right footer from the tightest of angles to
